Last month was the wettest August in parts of the country for 170 years.
Met Eireann figures show there were as many as three weeks of rainy days last month, well above the average of 10 to 14 days.
It was the dullest August on record in Dublin, while nationally there was between 20% and 40% less sunshine than usual.
